It started with a familiar problem: two people, a comfortable sofa, and 45 minutes of scrolling Netflix without picking anything. The paradox of choice is real — the more you have to choose from, the harder it is to decide.

We built Movie Roulette in 2024 as a side project to solve exactly that. The idea is simple: tell us your mood, pick a genre, and let fate do the rest. No rating algorithms trying to keep you engaged, no promoted titles, no hidden agenda — just a random, genuinely good film pulled from a database of hundreds of thousands of titles.

Since launch we've added streaming filters (so you only get picks you can actually watch tonight), a decade slider, Couples Mode, Group Vote for movie nights with friends, and one-click trailer previews. The core promise hasn't changed: a great pick in under three seconds, completely free.

The paradox of choice is a well-documented phenomenon: when given too many options, people experience decision paralysis and often end up less satisfied with whatever they choose. Barry Schwartz popularised the concept in 2004, but streaming platforms have turned it into an everyday experience. Netflix's own internal research estimates that subscribers spend an average of 18 minutes per session browsing before selecting something — and a significant share give up and watch nothing.

The reason algorithms make this worse is counterintuitive. Recommendation systems are designed to maximise engagement — meaning they surface content you're statistically likely to click, not content you'll most enjoy. They surface things trending right now, things promoted by the platform, and things in a narrow range adjacent to what you've already watched. This creates a feedback loop: you watch a thriller, the algorithm shows you more thrillers, you never accidentally discover a documentary or a 1970s comedy you'd have loved.

Random selection breaks that loop entirely. When a pick is made by chance from a quality-filtered pool, there's no ranking bias, no engagement optimisation, no hidden commercial priority. Every qualifying film — whether it was released this year or thirty years ago, whether it has a massive marketing budget or none — has an equal shot. This is why Movie Roulette regularly surfaces films that users love and describe as "a film I never would have chosen myself." That's not a bug. That's the point.

Movie Roulette draws from The Movie Database (TMDB), a community-maintained index of over 500,000 film and television titles. TMDB is also the data source for JustWatch, Letterboxd, and dozens of other film tools — it's the most comprehensive freely available film database in existence, maintained by volunteers and professional contributors worldwide.

When you set filters and spin, the roulette queries TMDB's API in real time. Genre, mood, streaming platform, decade, and runtime filters are all applied server-side before a random selection is made. The No Bad Movies toggle adds a minimum rating filter of 7.0 out of 10 — removing roughly the bottom third of the database and keeping results in the range of films that a majority of viewers rated positively. Streaming availability data comes from TMDB's streaming provider dataset, which reflects current US catalogue availability and is updated regularly.

One important note: streaming catalogues change monthly. A film available on Netflix when you spin may not be available in three months. Movie Roulette reflects current availability at the time of the spin. The data is as fresh as TMDB's last update — typically within 24–48 hours of catalogue changes.
